New Beginnings in 2019

2018 was pretty solid. I made a lot of progress on a lot of projects, personal and authorly! But this isn't a post about looking backward--this is a post about a fresh new start.

Earlier this month, El Husband and I packed ourselves up and moved half-way across the country from New York to North Dakota. Back to North Dakota, I suppose, since we met at the University of North Dakota, in college. But even so, neither one of us thought we'd ever be coming back.

But we're here! A new job for El Husband and a new office for me! I'm thrilled to finally have a dedicated space for writing--and once I have it all put together, there will be pictures of more than just Maya doing her best to keep me from working on the freshly delivered couch!

For now, we're still in the waiting for our stuff to arrive period, slowly acquiring the things we need to set up our new place. Including a new PO Box, which until I can nail one down, I'm afraid we'll be a little bit newsletter-less, so I apologize for the delay there, but I promise I'm doing my best to get things back in order and keep you up to date AMALIAD style.

In the meantime--if you didn't see it on facebook and twitter, I did a podcast interview over at THE ENDLESS KNOT, talking about writing myth with some of my favorite twitter folks. It was a lot of fun chatting about Freydis and Theseus, so I hope you'll check it out!

And don't forget to mark FROM ASGARD, WITH LOVE want-to-read on Goodreads!! I'm working my way through final edits right now, and if all continues according to plan without any more big cross-country-move-style monkey-wrenches, I'll have that available for you in the first half of February! So keep your eyes peeled and get ready!!!

(Perhaps by reading POSTCARDS FROM ASGARD? Or maybe DAUGHTER OF A THOUSAND YEARS, which is on sale for the rock bottom price of 99 cents for kindle right now!)

From Asgard, With Love (Plus Cover Art!)

I had one goal for myself in November--because I knew I didn't have 50K in me after the hyperproductivity of the summer, and going into the holidays is always kind of a mess for getting anything done on this end, in addition--I wanted to finish FROM ASGARD, WITH LOVE before the end of the month.

Now, you should know that when I added this project into my calendar for the year, I thought it had maybe 10,000 words left in it. It was supposed to be a novella. A companion to POSTCARDS FROM ASGARD, but not a true sequel. Nothing too heavy or intensive. (And before THAT it was supposed to be a short story--but I digress.) Just an easy thing to finish and release. (lol lol lol!)

When all was said and done and I typed The End this month, this not-so-light, super-intensive, definitely-not-a-novella had cost me an additional 56,000 words. So yeah. As usual, I'm delivering a much longer than anticipated installment in a series that wasn't supposed to be a whole lot of work for me.

(I should really stop pretending I have any idea of what my stories are going to become, length-wise.)

I have been poking at FROM ASGARD, WITH LOVE for going on six years now. Six. Years. This isn't something I'd normally pay that much attention to, but this particular project's beginning sticks in my mind a little bit more, um, hauntingly. You see, just after I'd started writing it, after moving into my grandfather's house, he had a stroke. And after the very intensive months of his recovery from that stroke, he had another. That one, he didn't ever recover from, and a matter of weeks later, he'd passed away.

As you can imagine, and you'll understand more completely why when you read FROM ASGARD, WITH LOVE, I had to put it on hold for a while after that. I'd come back to it every year, write a couple thousand more words before I needed to set it aside again. Sometimes because I was under contract and on deadline for another project, and sometimes because I just couldn't face it or the memories it brought.

But this year? This year, for the first time, I felt like it was time. Like I was ready to face it and finish it and get it out into the world. I needed to write it, and the writing of it had to be completed HERE, in the house where it had all begun.

And Grandpa--this one is for you.

FROM ASGARD, WITH LOVE is coming to you in 2019!

This is a companion to POSTCARDS FROM ASGARD, taking place some time after it, and with a peek at Thjalfi and Gwen living their happily ever after, but it's not really a true sequel. Thematically--Well. Let's just say it's not quite so light and fluffy. I hope you'll love it anyway!

If you're subscribed to The Amaliad, you got to see this cover first. You even got to read about how this book made me metaphorically bleed all over the pages! (Yes, this is me suggesting that if you haven't subscribed already, you should do so! again!)

Don't worry, I see you out there, you dedicated Orc Saga readers desperately awaiting news on Orc3. Wondering why/how I could write this without writing that first. There's a real and legitimate reason--but that's a whole other blogpost for another day. Just know I haven't forgotten you and I'm still working on Orc3, too. And in the meantime, grab THE QUEEN AND HER BROOK HORSE. I know not all of you have read it yet :)

Notes from the Writer Cave: Progress is Progressing!

Another update for all of you, because I know everyone is anxious, always, for more Orc Saga news.

I have finally COMPLETED The Queen and her Brook Horse! Right now it's sitting just shy of 39,000 words, which is also long enough for me to do a paperback in addition to an ebook release. I have edits to do still, of course, which will take me a little bit of time because the length is way lengthier than I had originally intended, and then formatting, but this short-story-turned-novella will still be going out to Newsletter subscribers first, for FREE, so make sure you sign up if you're an Orc Saga fan! (I'm aiming for end of February.)

One other important note: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not read this novella until AFTER you have read BLOOD OF THE QUEEN. I will be including this warning in my newsletter when it goes out, too, but this is a spoilery prequel and I don't want anything to be ruined for you. So even though this takes place BEFORE Honor Among Orcs, I'm going to be calling it 2.5 for a legit reading order reason.

Okay, I lied, ANOTHER couple important notes: This is not a romance. Bolthorn is not in it. Fossegrim, however, is, for those of you who loved him.

(I just don't want anyone to be disappointed! Can you tell I have turned a corner in my writing which is full of "oh god I have no idea what I'm doing how did I get here what if everything is bad?!")

In also exciting news--meet Postcards from Asgard's new cover art:

Pretty sure I just fell in love with Thjalfi all over again just looking at this. Designed by Caitlin Greer, who is fabulous, by the way. Augh I need to update my interior. *adds that to today's to-do list* SORRY CAIT I AM ON IT.

I'll also have a new paperback edition shortly with the new art, so if you are a paperback reader and haven't already picked this one up, hang tight.

2017 Writing Recap and 2018 Goals

So, last year was a little hit or miss for me.
Those of you who follow the blog or twitter or facebook probably already know that it was a rough year. I struggled a lot to get back on the writing horse--to love writing again. But I got there, with a couple of passion for-fun projects that were just for me! And even though I "only" wrote two novellas and one novel in 2017, and didn't get done some of the things I wanted to, I'm proud of myself, and the work I put in.

I just set up my spreadsheet for 2018, and since Jamie Raintree upped her sheet to support up to 10 projects, I filled it up, but I really only have two priorities this year and both of them are Orc Saga! First, the short I promised you, which I want to wrap and get out to you this month, and then Orc 3 until it's done!

On the editing and publishing side, I've got a couple of completed manuscripts that I want to do something with though I'm not quite sure what or how yet, plus I want to get some of my serialized fiction, Imaginary Friend and Thor in Zombie Land particularly, into an ebook format for ease of reading and distribution, and get those out there for you all (Imaginary Friend will probably go out free to Newsletter subscribers, but likely it'll have a 99 cent price point via retailers. Sooooo. Sign up?) I also have plans to re-cover Postcards from Asgard this year so it's a little bit more representative of the moderately sensual contemporary romance (with fantastic Norse Myth elements) contents. (Why can't I write things that fit neatly in a box? WHY. WHHHHYYY.)

But after Orc 3--who knows? I have thoughts and plans for more Amalia Carosella titles (including a Theseus/Antiope book because all the hearts) and I have a Fate of the Gods novella-that-will-probably-be-a-novel-by-the-time-it's-done on my back burner, along with a couple more contemporary ideas, name and brand to be determined. But I promised myself I would spend 2018 giving myself a break from agonizing over the publishing side of things, so I'm keeping it nebulous and probably going to spend all my post-Orc 3 time just writing for the love of writing. And if that means I only release on book this year, I'm okay with that. Hopefully you will be, too.

I was going to leave you with a little teaser title for my Orc Saga short story but I've been staring at it all day now and still can't decide what the final title should be, never mind the final teaser image itself. Something to look forward to on another day, I guess!
