A Taste of Concealing Fate

(Cross-posted from Facebook)

We're not that far out from Enduring Fate's release, I know, but I'm editing Concealing Fate (available for pre-order!) right now, my next Fate of the Gods Novel(la) and just falling completely in love all over again with Garrit and Eve.

Patreon Patrons have already gotten a sneak peek of this one, which tells the story of how Garrit and Eve met BEFORE the events of Forged by Fate, but it's time to give you all a taste, too, I think! So how about a #WiPpet?

The wine arrived, and her breath caught at the lion’s head on the label. She barely held herself back from tearing it from the waiter’s hands, forcing herself to wait until he had poured them each a glass and Garrit had placed their order. Until they were alone again, and she reached out, only allowing herself to trace her fingers over the golden embossing. The mark of the House of Lions.

“You’re familiar with the label?” Garrit asked, pleased again—just as he had been when she’d approved of his wine choice at the café, before. She could well imagine that her taste in wine might influence his opinion of her, all things considered.

“It’s beautiful,” she said, deflecting. She would have to lie, otherwise, and she couldn’t bring herself to do it. “A lion’s head on a cross.”

“It was meant to look like one, certainly,” he said. “But the story goes that the DeLeons were pagans of a sort, disinterested in the Christian faith that had spread. But of course, after France became Catholic and their lands annexed, they could not defy the Church so openly without courting trouble, and their hammers, placed four together, formed crosses instead.”

She laughed, not only at the cleverness of the design, but at the absurdity of the conversation. That she might be sitting across from a man who thought he knew more about her family than she did. Perhaps he did know more—of how they were seen by their neighbors, at least, if nothing else. “I almost forgot you’re from that same part of France.”

“Quite near,” he agreed.

“Do you know the family?” she asked, unable to help herself. “One vintner to another?”

He made a soft sound, not quite an agreement or a denial, and raised his glass instead. “À ta santé.”

“À la tienne,” she replied, lifting her own glass and meeting his eyes.

He grinned, taking a drink, and she had no choice at all but to do the same, or risk offending him. The wine—her eyes fell closed, the familiarity, the complexity of flavors and aromas just as she remembered. How much of this wine had she drunk in her last life? How much five hundred years before? She would never lose the taste of it, never fail to recognize its character. No matter how it changed, season to season, good year or bad, she knew these grapes. Had brushed her fingers along every vine.

“I knew you’d like it,” he said quietly, and not without a certain amount of pride. “You have a taste, I think, for good wine, for all you cannot have had much of it before coming to France.”

She snorted at that, opening her eyes. He was watching her with naked delight, as if he’d shared some portion of her pleasure in the tasting just by seeing it on her face. “Because there’s no such thing as good wine in London?”

He lifted a shoulder, dismissive. “It isn’t the same, drinking it abroad. Some wines travel well across the channel, but the DeLeon wines are best enjoyed here, in France.”

“Are you sure that isn’t just clever marketing?” she asked, laughing. “In my experience, there are very few wines that don’t travel perfectly well, regardless of where they’re made and with what grapes.”

“Ah, but you do not have access to their best pressing,” he said, smiling now with just a hint of teasing condescension. “Those wines do not leave the country, bought up too quickly by our own countrymen—which of course drives up demand for the lesser table wines that do. Clever marketing and truth, both, for the finest DeLeon wines do not travel across the channel at all.”

Cover Reveal and Pre-Order link are coming soon! I can't wait to share this Forged by Fate prequel with all of you!!

Summer Update, 2019!

So wow, okay. Lots to share!

I'm happy to report that the backmatter of HONOR AMONG ORCS's paperback is now updated and live, so if you were holding off for that, it's ready for your purchase! Enjoy!

I've been on kind of a short story formatting spree, to get some content going for my Patreon patrons (Thank you, Patrons!!!) and I've released Frost Bitten, Twice Shy for your reading pleasure! It's just 99 cents right now but it'll go up to 1.99 before the end of August. It's also available in WIDE release so if you're not a kindle reader, I've got you!

Available NOW to Patreon Patrons is another short story, Refuge, which will remain Patreon exclusive for likely the foreseeable forever--but the good news there is that for just $1 a month, you can read it as a blogpost, along with Frost Bitten, Twice Shy, AND my take on Samson and Delilah, Favor of God, which I just released for Patreon Patrons as well! Not going to lie, I am kind of in love with all three of these short stories and have been for a really long time, so I'm excited to be able to share them finally.

(If you bump that 1 dollar a month up to 5 dollars a month, you'll get all three as epub/mobi files, right now, too--for a limited time! Favor of God will go kindle exclusive after August 15th!)

Coming in August for Patreon 5 dollar Patrons (ThorsBFFs) first: ENDURING FATE, a NEW Fate of the Gods novella which tackles Eve's life in the ward during the early 20th century. It should be read as book 2.75 in the series AFTER Fate Forgotten! Patrons also got to see the cover art first, but today is the day I'm revealing it to the rest of the world! Are you ready?

Kindle Pre-Order!

For everyone else, Enduring Fate will release in September! Huzzah! [Kindle Pre-Order Go!] It's going Amazon Exclusive for the near future, so if you want the epub, Patreon is really your best bet in the shorter term. And during the first two weeks of August, if you Patron in for 5 dollars, you're basically getting two free short stories for the price of Enduring and Favor if you were going to buy them on Amazon later! So. It's not a bad deal!

(No hard feelings if you sign up as a 5 dollar patron on August 1 and cancel or drop to a 1 dollar level before the end of the month, either! I feel you.)

But listen:
Enduring Fate is a tough read. It was a tough WRITE for that matter--which is why even though I wrote a goodly portion of it in 2010 it languished on my hard drive for the last 9 years. TW: This novella contains miscarriages, verbal and physical abuse, suicidal ideation, self-harm, discussion of abortion, the grossness of eugenics generally and forced sterilization specifically.

Please read with care and consideration for your own mental health. I think it's important because so few people understand our own history of Eugenics in America, and how our love affair with it directly influenced the atrocities of WWII, and it was definitely an important story for me personally, for other reasons in addition. But. It may not be the best read for all of you, and I don't want to do any of you any harm in sharing it.

Okay?
Okay.

I'm holding off on the paperback edition of this novella for the moment because I am over 40K deep in another Fate of the Gods was-supposed-to-be-a-novella-also contemporary prequel to Forged by Fate, exploring how Eve and Garrit actually met and got together, and I'm leaning toward packaging them together as a paperback edition instead of doing two smaller volumes. If there is an outcry from readers demanding a paperback of Enduring Fate alone, I'll be happy to change my mind, so do let me know if your feelings on this subject are strong!

I think that about covers it for the time being! Still no newsletter because I still don't have a PO Box (Author Amalia is extremely broke) but I'll continue to keep you updated via the blog, Patreon, Twitter, and Facebook, so check back often!

Orc1 and Orc2 Update

Hi Readers!

This is just a quick housekeeping note--

HONOR AMONG ORCS and BLOOD OF THE QUEEN are in the process of being unpublished on one end* and republished on the other, so if you notice availability isn't quite right or broken links, that's why. I'm working as hard and as fast as Amazon will allow to get this sorted and the books live again with as little disruption to potential new readers as possible!

What you can expect:

  • The KINDLE EDITION of HONOR AMONG ORCS is already up and running! Huzzah! If you haven't checked out my Orc Saga, now is as good a time as ever will be! With a bonus of helping me recover some of the long-term-algorithmic ranking xp if you buy it now :)
  • HONOR AMONG ORCS PAPERBACK IS NOW LIVE!! I have suspicions that the paperback of HONOR might get bounced back on some pagination technicality, and if that happens, it's going to take me a while to get it sorted out--I don't have the final final correct word doc from which to rebuild a new pdf without reproofing the whole book and doing some reformatting so your patience will definitely be appreciated if it comes to that.
  • BLOOD OF THE QUEEN is now LIVE in paperback AND for kindleis just waiting for Amazon to give it a thumbs up--all the files are submitted and updated and looking pretty, so hopefully they won't make me wait too much longer. I DO have the final final word doc for BLOOD so any paperback formatting issues can be quickly addressed if KDP gives me grief. (Fingers crossed/knock on wood we can transition smoothly.)
  • THE QUEEN AND HER BROOK HORSE will remain available and is completely unaffected! Available for kindle AND in paperback! It is also enrolled in Kindle Unlimited if you prefer to read by subscription!

I'll update you all on Facebook and Twitter when the new editions go live and replace the old main links (on the orc saga page and the sidebar) when I have new ones that work! (If you buy the new editions and notice anything amiss, please let me know. I did my best but--mistakes creep in with every file edit.)

Thanks again for your patience and happy reading!!!

*the first two Orc Saga titles were originally published via my agency when I was but a newb and knew not what I was doing--they were very kind to hold my hand through the initial self-pub process and I am so grateful for the work they did in getting me my one and only bookbub feature, among other things!
